After a brief hiatus over the 4th of July holiday, I’m back to provide my pitcher recommendations for Wednesday night’s eight-game slate. The pitching option tonight look a lot like the options I had when I last wrote on Friday with Johnny Cueto leading the way once again. I also apparently don’t learn from my mistakes as I am going back to another pitcher against the Padres even though Nathan Eovaldi didn’t work out too well last Friday.
Ace
Johnny Cueto (FD-$10,800 / DK-$11,800)
Cueto is a big home favorite tonight against the Rockies and is the obvious “ace” pitching option on the night slate. The Rockies have struck out the 5th most (23.7%) on the road this season and also rank in the bottom six in wOBA and wRC+ away from home. Cueto is a near must play in Cash games and will be very highly owned so he could be a good fade in GPPs.
Value
Drew Smyly (FD-$9,000 / DK-$8,100)
Tonight will be a battle of a high strikeout pitcher in Smyly against a team in the Angels that strikes out at a league low 15.7% against lefties. While this could limit Smyly’s strikeout potential, he should still be able to produce one of the highest strikeout totals on the slate. Smyly will also be pitching at home where he has performed better this season allowing opponents to hit just .196 with a .274 wOBA and 11.05 K/9. Smyly is a solid #2 pitching option in Cash games and GPP option on any site.
Jaime Garcia (FD-$8,300 / DK-$8,300)
Garcia has pitched better at home over his career with a 2.76 ERA and will be pitching at home against the Pirates tonight. The Pirates have struggled against lefties this season striking out 24.2% (2nd worst) and Garcia has had some success against the Pirates tossing seven shutout innings with nine strikeouts in a game late last season at home. Garcia is a strong #2 pitching option in Cash games and potential GPP option.
Darkhorse
Shelby Miller (FD-$6,900 / DK-$4,600)
This could be a huge mistake but I have a gut feeling that Miller will pitch his best game of the season tonight. Granted that might not be saying much as the bar is pretty low with a 6+ inning, one run, five strikeout performance being the high point for Miller this season. He is facing the Padres but they have been hitting better recently and the game is in hitter-friendly Arizona. I know it almost sounds like I’m making a case to not play Miller but without many other cheap options with upside tonight he is worth a flier in a GPP on DraftKings as a dirt cheap #2 pitching option so you can get all the high-priced bats you want.
