Big slate for a Monday night with 13 games of MLB action on the docket. The slate has a nice mix of ace pitching options and strong value plays with some upside, so let’s get to it.
Ace
Jake Arrieta (FD-$10,900 / DK-$12,300)
I expected Jose Fernandez to be the chalk play at pitcher tonight but I give a slight edge to Arrieta. Fernandez has had some “struggles” on the road and the Mets have been hitting lately. Meanwhile, Arrieta is a huge favorite at home against the Pirates who he has dominated at home this season in two starts, throwing 14 innings while allowing just two runs and recording 22 strikeouts. I expect Arrieta to have another strong outing as a lower owned ace making him a good Cash and GPP option.
Value
Carlos Martinez (FD-$9,700 / DK-$10,300)
Martinez is one of the rare pitchers that consistently pitches better on the road than he does at home with a career road ERA of 2.87 compared to 3.87 at home. Tonight he will pitch on the road in Milwaukee facing a Brewers’ team that has the highest strikeout rate (25.4%) against righties. Martinez has also had great success against Brewers’ hitters allowing just a .276 wOBA with a huge 37.7% strikeout rate over 69 plate appearances. Martinez is a viable Cash and GPP option.
Matt Shoemaker (FD-$8,700 / DK-$7,200)
Shoemaker’s strikeout rate has decreased as the season has progressed down to 13.4% in August compared to a high mark of 29.0% back in May but he has still been a good pitcher capable of producing solid fantasy production and the occasional big game. He has a chance for a big game tonight pitching at home against the Reds who have the 3rd lowest wRC+ (82) and 5th lowest wOBA (.299) on the road this season while striking out 21.0% of the time. Shoemaker is a Cash game option on two-pitcher sites and potential GPP play.
Darkhorse
Michael Pineda (FD-$8,500 / DK-$7,100)
Pineda travels to Kansas City tonight to face a Royals’ team that ranks in the bottom five in wOBA, wRC+ and ISO against righties this season. He will pitch in a park that suppresses home runs which have been his biggest downfall this season. Pineda also has some strikeout upside with a 26.3% strikeout rate this season. I would likely limit exposure to Pineda to GPP lineups.
