I had a strong Week 1 topping the leaderboard on the Hitting side while grabbing 5th on the Pitching side. Today I will focus on the five-game night slate. This is the first slate I am writing about with a game at Coors Field. While two of the three games at Coors over the weekend were pretty tame on the scoring front there were some good pitchers throwing in those games, which is not the case tonight with Jarred Cosart and Tyler Chatwood taking the hill.
Let’s mow down the competition 3 Up and 3 Down…
3 Up
Ace
Jacob deGrom (FD-$10,000 / DK-$9,300)
For some reason, deGrom is priced $2,000 less than Jon Lester tonight on DraftKings. Squeezing them both in in Cash games could be a viable strategy with question marks throughout the rest of the pitchers on the night slate. Jacob deGrom pitched well in his first outing throwing six shutout innings against the Mets. He will face a Phillies team that struck out 23.1% (5th worst) and in the bottom two in wOBA and wRC+ against righties last season. He will be a very popular selection which could mean he is worth fading in GPPs on a short slate.
Value
Tyler Glasnow (FD-$4,400 / DK-$7,500)
The middle tier of pitchers tonight looks like a crapshoot. On FanDuel, Glasnow is somehow priced at just $4,400 and while I do think he has some blow-up potential (see my hitter stacks below), he also could be the best of the middle class on tonight’s slate as a decent favorite pitching at home against the Reds. I am leery of him for Cash games but he would be worth GPP consideration for sure on both sites.
Darkhorse
Brandon Finnegan (FD-$7,200 / DK-$7,300)
My darkhorse tonight will take the opposite side of the Pirates/Reds matchup. It is an extremely small sample size but the Pirates have been dreadful against lefties so far this season striking out 29% of the time with a .137 wOBA and -16 wRC+ (yes -16) in 31 plate appearances. The Pirates were good against lefties last season with a top 5 wOBA and wRC+, proceed with caution but tonight could be an opportunity to take advantage of a slow start by the Pirates’ bats in GPPs.
3 Down
Top Stacks
Rockies vs. Jarred Cosart
Cosart will be making his first start of the season at Coors Field and has allowed a 1.6 HR/9 on the road over his last two seasons. You do the math, start your Rockies’ hitters.
Nolan Arenado (FD-$4,900 / DK-$5,300) – Arenado has started the season strong and should continue at home against a righty where he had a .341 ISO and .420 wOBA against that combo last season.
Charlie Blackmon (FD-$4,500 / DK-$5,100) – Blackmon will get maximum opportunities to tee off against Cosart batting leadoff for the team with the highest implied run total on the slate.
Carlos Gonzalez (FD-$3,900 / DK-$5,200) – Gonzalez has the biggest home/road splits of the Rockies big hitters with a .271 ISO and .407 wOBA last season.
Tony Wolters (FD-$3,100 / DK-$3,300) – Wolters is a DK play only with his low price tag he could allow you work the wrap around stack (8-1-3-4) to differentiate your Rockies stack. His price makes this a less viable option on FD.
Nationals vs. Adam Wainwright
Wainwright pitched okay in his season debut against the Cubs limiting them to two runs over five innings. However, that was at home where he had a solid 3.20 ERA last season. He goes on the road tonight against the Nationals where he brings his 6.18 road ERA last season. He struggled somewhat in his one start in Washington last season giving up four runs, including three homers.
Bryce Harper (FD-$4,700 / DK-$5,000) – Harper hit one of the homers off Wainwright last season and continues his strong start to seasons with two homers in his first six games this year.
Daniel Murphy (FD-$3,600 / DK-$4,600) – Murphy is picking up right where he left off last season hitting .480 through the first six games. He had a .414 wOBA at home versus righties last season.
Adam Eaton (FD-$3,700 / DK-$4,200) – With Trea Turner possibly out our limited to run with his hamstring injury, consider Eaton instead who will hit near the top of the lineup and has a hit in five of his first six games.
Ryan Zimmerman (FD-$2,800 / DK-$3,500) – Zimmermann was 3-for-3 with two homers off Wainwright last season and is off to a hot start this year with three homers (all off righties) so far this season.
Contrarian Stack
Reds vs. Tyler Glasnow
Glasnow will be making just his fifth start in the big leagues on Monday. While he has great potential, he will likely still have some ups-and-downs early in his career. Glasnow gave up nine steals in just 23.2 innings last season and the Reds are not a team to have trouble with speedsters.
Billy Hamilton (FD-$3,200 / DK-$3,800) – As long has Hamilton can reach base a couple times he could be in for a multiple SB night.
Joey Votto (FD-$3,900 / DK-$4,600) – While Votto won’t steal, he could have runners in scoring position all night long.
Adam Duvall (FD-$3,400 / DK-$3,900) – Duvall did his best work on the road against righties last season with a .269 ISO.
Jose Peraza (FD-$2,900 / DK-$3,500) – Peraza could also take advantage on the basepaths and scoring runs as the Reds play some “small ball” against the Pirates.
