I suppose I was due for “one of those nights” where my pitchers failed to come through for me. Although any night that a pitcher throwing at Coors Field is one of the top pitchers of the night you know it was an upside down kind of day. With a split slate today, I will focus on tonight’s nine-game slate of action to provide my usual four pitcher recommendations.
Ace
Max Scherzer (FD-$9,100 / DK-$11,300)
Scherzer has had some ups and downs so far this season including giving up seven runs in his previous outing against the Cubs. Tonight Scherzer will pitch at home against his old team, the Tigers. The Tigers have struck out 24.2% (6th worst) against righties this season and will be without a DH playing in the NL park. Scherzer beats out Noah Syndergaard on FanDuel because of the significant price savings but I am okay with either ace on DraftKings at similar prices.
Value
Jaime Garcia (FD-$8,800 / DK-$8,900)
While Garcia’s strikeout rate this season has gone up over his career mark, don’t expect many strikeouts from Garcia tonight facing an Angels team that has stuck out just 11.9% of the time against lefties. The allure of Garcia tonight is his ability get hitters to hit the ball on the ground which will allow him to limit the damage and go deep into the game while the Cardinals offense puts runs on the board against the Angels’ Matt Shoemaker to bring home the win for Garcia. I would limit my exposure to Garcia to be just a Cash game option with his limited strikeout upside.
Jerad Eickhoff (FD-$6,900 / DK-$8,000)
By now it is almost an automatic to start the pitcher throwing against the Braves each night and tonight is no exception with Eickhoff slated to pitch for the Phillies against the Braves. Eickhoff has shown some flashes of dominance this season including a seven inning, nine strikeout performance against a similar light-hitting team against righties the Padres earlier this season. Maybe most impressive from Eickhoff is that he pounds the strike zone with only seven walks in six starts this season. Eickhoff is a good play in both Cash games as a #2 pitcher option and in GPPs.
Darkhorse
Juan Nicasio (FD-$7,900 / DK-$6,000)
Nicasio has pitched well to start the season with a 3.16 ERA and 9.2 K/9. He will pitch tonight on a full week’s rest due to the rainout yesterday and will face a Reds team that he shutout over seven innings with eight strikeouts two weeks ago. Nicasio has good strikeout upside tonight against the Reds who have struck out 22.5% of the time against righties this season. I would rather use Eickhoff on FanDuel at a $1,000 discount but on DraftKings Nicasio is a great GPP option and maybe even playable in Cash games if you are looking to save on your #2 starter.
