I had positive results with my recommendations last week including 7 2/3 innings of no-hit baseball from my Darkhorse pick, Adam Conley, on Friday to increase my DailyOverlay score and remain in first place in the overall standings. However, baseball can be unpredictable sometimes and I know that I cannot rest on my laurels or I will fall as quickly as I have risen. So with that on to tonight’s recommendations, including taking a detour around “narrative street” and a “gut call” for my Darkhorse pick.

Ace

Dallas Keuchel (FD-$10,500 / DK-$9,900)

Keuchel hasn’t been very “ace-like” so far this season with a 4.41 ERA and just 7.4 K/9 through his first five starts. However, tonight Keuchel gets a little home cookin’ where he has pitched significantly better over his career including eight innings of shutout baseball in his only home start this season. He will also be facing a Twins team who has struck out 25.9% of the time (4th worst) and have just a .078 ISO (2nd worst) against lefties this season. Keuchel can be used on any site in both Cash and GPP, as I expect Johnny Cueto to be more popular tonight with his “going back to Cincy” narrative.

Value

Gerrit Cole (FD-$9,100 / DK-$9,400)

Cole actually ranks as my top rated pitcher on the night, even ahead of Keuchel and Cueto. However, I am not willing to recommend him as my Ace option tonight because he has some blow up potential throwing against the potent Cubs lineup. That said, Cole has had some success limiting the Cubs power bats only allowing five extra-base hits to the Cubs hitters over 107 at-bats in his career and he will be pitching at home in PNC Park which is favorable to pitchers. Cole is a great option for GPPs tonight and could maybe be used in Cash games as your second pitcher if you can find enough value bats to pay up for two higher priced pitching options.

Bartolo Colon (FD-$7,700 / DK-$6,700)

There is nothing flashy about Colon, he won’t strikeout a ton of batters but he typically won’t hurt you either with a terrible outing. Tonight is all about the win, as Colon will pitch at home against the Braves as a huge favorite. Picking on the Braves offense has been a successful endeavor so far this season and Colon should be able to throw a solid outing and pick up a win tonight. I prefer to use Colon as a second pitching option on two-pitcher sites in Cash lineups tonight.

Darkhorse

James Shields (FD-$7,800 / DK-$7,800)

Shields is my “gut call” tonight as the numbers to not back up my feeling that he is in a good spot tonight. First of all, he is pitching against a Rockies team that has hit well both at home and away this season with a .215 ISO (2nd best) and .331 wOBA (10th best) in away games. They have also been good against righties as a top 6 offense in ISO and wOBA this season. I also expect his opposing pitcher, Jonathan Gray to be a trendy sleeper pick tonight, especially on FanDuel where his is just $5,500. So tonight, I am going to throw a dart with Shields in GPPs and hope that my gut can hit a bullseye.
