Rough night for the “aces” that took the mound last night with Johnny Cueto, Gerrit Cole and Dallas Keuchel all getting hit hard. Good thing today is “Arrieta Day”. I know that is typically reserved for Clayton Kershaw but I think it is time to graduate Jake Arrieta into the same class.

Ace

Jake Arrieta (FD-$12,100 / DK-$12,100)

Arrieta is the obvious choice as the Ace pitcher tonight with the only other consideration being Matt Harvey. But until I see a couple dominate performances from Harvey he will not be an “ace” recommendation for me. Not much needs to be said about Arrieta with a 1.00 ERA and 24.8% K-rate so far this season. He pitched against the Pirates five times last season and allowed just three earned runs over 36 innings. Fade him at your own risk.

Value

Jose Quintana (FD-$8,600 / DK-$8,100)

Quintana has been sensational so far this season with a 1.47 ERA and 9.4 K/9. He will face the Red Sox tonight who have struck out 25.4% (5th worst) of the time with a .269 wOBA (3rd worst) and .124 ISO (6th worst) against lefties this season. Quintana is a great #2 pitching option on two-pitcher sites and solid GPP play if you want to fade Arrieta.

Jeff Samardzija (FD-$8,700 / DK-$8,200)

The pick for my second value pitcher tonight came down to Matt Moore and Samardzija. Both are solid plays but I feel that Samardzija is in a slightly better spot. Samardzija will face a Reds team that is in the bottom 10 in K%, wOBA and ISO against righties even with their outburst against Cueto last night. Samardzija is also in good position to earn a win tonight facing Reds’ pitcher Jon Moscot.

Darkhorse

Nick Tropeano (FD-$6,400 / DK-$5,600)

Tropeano faces a Brewers team that has scored a total of 22 runs over the last two day but the stars are aligning for Tropeano to be a good cheap option at pitcher tonight. First, he will square off against a rookie pitcher making his first big league start in Junior Guerra, putting Tropeano in a good position to pick up a win. Second, Tropeano has been a good strikeout pitcher so far this season with 8.4 K/9 and faces a Brewers’ team that has struck out 25.4% of the time against righties (4th worst) this season. Lastly, the Brewers hitters are a little banged up right now with Scooter Gennett on the DL, Domingo Santana as a late scratch with shoulder tightness and Ryan Braun dealing with “general soreness”. With all three potentially out of the lineup, Tropeano will be facing bench hitters and a pitcher slot in the NL park. Tropeano is a Cash game option as a #2 pitcher on two-pitcher sites and as a GPP option on all sites.
