This past week was… rough.  Jason Day had an injury that turned out to be not so much of a factor.  A lot of people were scared off of the eventual winner.  If Day really was hurt, I’d hate to see what he does to the field this week after running away with The Barclays.  Golden golfing gods Jordan Spieth and Brooks Koepka missed the cut.  Seriously, that happened.  Brandt Snedeker, Will Thrillcox (+6 in his final six to stone bubble), Rickie Fowler, Adam Scott’s zombie corpse, Charl Schwartzel, Keegan Bradley, Hunter Mahan, Ryan Moore, David Lingmerth, Ian Poulter, and Billy Horschel all also missed the cut.  There was plenty of misery and disappointment to go around.  I think this exchange was the best thing that happened to me all week:

Will and I are now best friends.

Jason Day crushed it, the experts were pretty bad, and SamENole won lots of money.  That’s the week in review.  Let’s get a quick look at the Drive the Green-winning and optimal lineups before moving on to the grading carnage.

Gotycha2 (I think I suffered an aneurysm trying to pronounce that name in my head) took down the $100,000 this week.  This is how he did it:

Jason Day (17.6%) $11,500 – 130
Henrik Stenson (11.5%) $9,600 – 111.5
Zach Johnson (16.1%) $8,100 – 92.5
Steven Bowditch (1.3%) $6,600 – 85
Tony Finau (17.1%) $7,300 – 82
Kevin Kisner (4.2%) $6,900 – 70.5

That’s 571.5 points on the full $50,000 spent.  Six great golfers with fairly recognizable names, yet not one with greater than 17.6% ownership.  Notice unlike recent weeks, this massive field GPP did not end in a tie.  He was able to produce a unique lineup by avoiding Spieth, Koepka, Kuchar, Snedeker, etc., and that led to him reaching his full earning potential.

The optimal lineup would have scored 631.5 on $48,800 spent.  It looked like this:

Jason Day $11,500 – 130
Bubba Watson $9,900 – 99
Henrik Stenson $9,600 – 111.5
Brian Harman $6,300 – 92.5
Sang-Moon Bae $5,900 – 103
Zac Blair $5,600 – 95.5

Yet another installment of “don’t be afraid to leave some extra salary on the table.”

This was easily the worst performance for both the Consensus and the expert group of the year.  I’ve never seen so many “F” grades in my life; and personally, this was the lowest grade I’ve received since that time I got a 4% on a physics pop quiz freshman year of college.  Let’s start with reviewing the Consensus.

Expert Consensus

Highly Touted

A – Jason Bohn
B – Justin Rose
B – Robert Streb
C – Matt Kuchar
F – Brandt Snedeker
F – Brooks Koepka
F – David Lingmerth
F – Jordan Spieth

B – Dustin Johnson
B – Webb Simpson
F – Rickie Fowler
F – Will Wilcox

If you just tossed the “highly touted” picks, you probably would’ve been alright.  Otherwise… yikes.  Your DK account would’ve almost assuredly been in better shape today than it was Wednesday if you took a week off.

It wasn’t all bad, though.  Two experts were able to rise above and turn in nice performances.

stlcardinals84 – rotogrinders.com (Daily Fantasy Foursome)

A+ – Bubba Watson
A – Jason Bohn
B – Paul Casey
F – David Lingmerth

Just like last week, stlcardinals84 only made four picks, but they were strong.  He had the highest overall grade for the week even with Lingmerth missing the cut.

Michael Riek – rotowire.com

A+ – Bubba Watson
A+ – Henrik Stenson
A+ – Jason Day
A+ – Zach Johnson
A – Camilo Villegas
A – Tony Finau
B – Dustin Johnson
B – George McNeill
B – Harris English
B – Kevin Kisner
B – Paul Casey
C – Phil Mickelson
F – Brooks Koepka
F – Chad Campbell
F – Charl Schwartzel
F – David Lingmerth
F – Jordan Spieth
F – Ryan Moore

Michael Riek’s overall score was lower than stlcards’, but he was the only expert to identify four golfers who would return “A+” value (many didn’t even hit one).  He made 18 picks, and 11 of them returned at least “B” value.  That’s really great in a week where some experts saw half of their guys miss the cut.  If you stuck with the player pool Riek suggested, you stood a fighting chance.

You can find the rest of the grades below.

Performance at The Barclays wasn’t the best.  So just

and move on.  I’ll be back tomorrow with some thoughts on the Deutsche Bank Championship.
