So… I think the strategy this week was to just pencil in the two best golfers in the field and fill out the rest of your roster with obvious value plays and guys with good course history.  Who knew it was that simple to win lots of money?  The top 33 entries in DraftKings’ Drive the Green GPP all featured both champion Jason Day and runner-up Bubba Watson.  If you didn’t have those two, you had to be nearly perfect to make any real money.  Two players who did hit on that combo, “riverfyshpoker” and “techsick14,” walked away with $55,000 each after tying for first in the DtG.

riverfyshpoker

Jason Day (30.0%) $11,600 – 143
Bubba Watson (21.7%) $11,100 – 131.5
David Hearn (9.1%) $7,100 – 108
Erik Compton (1.1%) $6,800 – 106
Stewart Cink (5.5%) $6,200 – 96
Scott Pinckney (3.7%) $7,200 – 78.5

techsick14

Jason Day (30.0%) $11,600 – 143
Bubba Watson (21.7%) $11,100 – 131.5
David Hearn (9.1%) $7,100 – 108
Erik Compton (1.1%) $6,800 – 106
Ricky Barnes (1.8%) $6,300 – 102.5
Colt Knost (4.4%) $6,700 – 72

As you can see, both lineups were pretty similar.  The top four were identical, and they both had five of the top-11 finishers with one golfer simply making the cut and racking up some weekend points.  This week, there was enough value in the $6-7k range to make Bubba-Day lineups viable, and these two did a great job of filling out a nice roster around that superstar core.  You’ll notice they didn’t gravitate towards the popular value picks with all four non-stars coming in at less than 10% ownership, and that helped set them apart from the pack.

The field did an amazing job this week.  Those two winning lineups mentioned above got within 28 points (4%) of the optimal lineup, and “techsick14” hit on 5 of the 6 optimal plays for the week!  He was a Tom Hoge for Colt Knost switch away from being perfect.  So close!  Let’s take a quick look at that optimal lineup, which scored 691 points and used $49,200 of the cap:

Jason Day (30.0%) $11,600 – 143
Bubba Watson (21.7%) $11,100 – 131.5
David Hearn (9.1%) $7,100 – 108
Erik Compton (1.1%) $6,800 – 106
Ricky Barnes (1.8%) $6,300 – 102.5
Tom Hoge (0.5%) $6,300 – 100

I added a couple more sites to the expert pool this week, and newcomer Steve Krebs of dfsmancave.com came out swinging.  He posted, in my opinion, the best performance of an expert to-date.

Eight picks.  Four “A” grades.  Three “B” grades.  One MC (Stroud shot 75 – 68 to miss the cut by one stroke).  He had a good mix of high-priced stars and solid value picks with upside.  If you stuck to this list of eight, you probably made lots of money this week.  Nice work, Mr. Krebs.

Overall, the expert consensus turned in a bit of a mediocre week.  There was definitely a winning lineup in there, as they hit on Day and Watson, but half of their 16 selections received a grade of “C” or worse (five received an “F”).
