My Darkhorse picks continue to pitch better than my Ace selections so far this week with Brandon Finnegan outscoring Max Scherzer on Monday and Robbie Erlin outscoring Corey Kluber yesterday (using DraftKings scoring). While I am glad that my Darkhorse pitchers are doing well, I am disappointed that my Ace of the night has been coming up short. So we’ll give it another shot tonight leading things off with Carlos Carrasco as my Ace of the night.
Ace
Carlos Carrasco (FD-$10,200 / DK-$11.900)
The last time Carrasco pitched in Tampa Bay against the Rays he had a no-hitter until two outs in the 9th inning before giving up a single. Carrasco also racked up 13 strikeouts that night. While only about half of the Rays’ lineup tonight were on the field that day the Rays still struggle against good right-handed pitching striking out 21.4% of the time last season and 24.9% of the time so far this year.
Value
Alex Wood (FD-$6,900 / DK-$7,200)
Wood and the Dodgers are third largest favorites on the board tonight at home against the Diamondbacks. Wood has always pitched better at home and that should not change this season pitching his home games at the pitcher friendly Dodgers Stadium. Also in Wood’s favor tonight is the Diamondbacks high K-rate against lefties early on this season at 28.4% (granted in a small sample size 49 PA). Wood is a viable option on both FanDuel and DraftKings in either Cash games or GPPs.
Jerad Eickhoff (FD-$7,000 / DK-$6,600)
Eickhoff will be making just his tenth major league start tonight for the Phillies but he has gotten off to a very good start to his career with an 8.36 K/9 and 2.73 ERA (3.31 FIP). Tonight Eickhoff faces a Padres offense that was just shut down by Charlie Morton last night and has been struck out 24.6% of the time against righties so far this season. I would reserve Eickhoff as just a GPP play tonight who has some upside.
Darkhorse
Colin Rea (FD-$5,000 / DK-$7,000)
Pitching opposite Eickhoff tonight is Colin Rea who is primarily a FanDuel recommendation due to is cheap $5,000 price tag. Rea and the Padres are only small underdogs against the Phillies tonight which gives him some cheap win potential which is huge on FanDuel. Rea’s only start this season came at Coors Field so many will be scared off by his early season 12.46 ERA. He has shown decent strikeout potential in his brief big league career with 7.75 K/9 over 36 innings. Rea is worth a shot on FanDuel in GPPs if you are looking to load up on high-priced bats.
