Monday night’s nine-game slate is all about strikeouts. There are not many strong pitching options that combine a favorable matchup with strikeout upside so I am going to just focus on the pitchers that have big strikeout upside and hope that they can limit the runs and hits.
Ace
Max Scherzer (FD-$10,000 / DK-$10,800)
Scherzer’s price tag is reduced from its typical level today as he travels to Coors Field to face the Rockies. Scherzer has the pitches to succeed in Coors with his fastball/slider combo and ability to miss bats. His ownership percentage might be reduced a little bit due to Coors but I expect him to rack up a lot of strikeouts making him worth both Cash and GPP consideration.
Value
Robbie Ray (FD-$7,800 / DK-$9,600)
Ray has a 32.5% strikeout rate since the All-Star break with a 2.65 xFIP over five starts. He will face a Mets’ team that has struck out 22.0% (13th highest) with the ninth worst wOBA against lefties this season. Ray is a good GPP option and potential Cash game option if you want to save salary.
Drew Smyly (FD-$8,500 / DK-$9,000)
Smyly has a chance to record double-digit strikeouts Monday against a Padres’ offense that has a 24.4% strikeout rate against lefties this season. He has also limited hard hits over his last two starts allowing just 14.3% and 18.8% hard contact. The Padres have had success against lefties when they do make contact so I would suggest limiting exposure to Smyly to only GPPs.
Darkhorse
David Phelps (FD-$6,100 / DK-$4,000)
Phelps will be making his third start of the season for the Marlins on Monday. He has been gradually ramping up his pitch count and innings over his first two starts and should be able to pitch deeper into the game tonight against the Reds. It isn’t often you can get a $4,000 pitcher (on DK) who is a road favorite but that is the situation tonight with Phelps. He is worth strong GPP consideration and could potentially be used as a #2 SP option on two-pitcher sites.
