My pitcher recommendations went well Monday night with the top pitcher on the slate, Carlos Martinez, and a solid outing by Matt Shoemaker. Jake Arrieta, on the other hand, was a different story. Enough about the past, let’s look to the future and tonight’s 15-game slate that features a few high-priced aces including Johnny Cueto and Zack Greinke facing each other.
Ace
Max Scherzer (FD-$11,200 / DK-$13,600)
I am going with the high-priced Scherzer who will be a popular pick tonight pitching against the Phillies as a big road favorite. The Phillies rank second to last in wOBA and wRC+ against righties this season with a 21.9% strikeout rate. He has had some rough starts on the road this season (3.35 ERA) so with his huge price tag on DraftKings I would consider limiting my exposure to GPPs but is playable in Cash and GPP lineups on FanDuel.
Value
Drew Pomeranz (FD-$9,000 / DK-$11,600)
Pomeranz is coming off a six innings, two runs, 11 strikeout performance against the Rays in his last outing and will square off with them again tonight. The Rays lead the league in strikeout rate (25.7%) against lefties this season and Pomeranz has strung together five straight starts allowing two runs or less. Pomeranz is a stronger play on FanDuel at a reduced salary but is a viable option for Cash or GPP lineups on both sites.
Zack Greinke (FD-$9,800 / DK-$8,300)
As I mentioned in the intro, Greinke will face off against the Giants and Johnny Cueto. While the Giants are a home favorite, I like the value that Greinke provides on DraftKings tonight at only $8,300. We could be in for a low-scoring pitcher’s duel and I like the potential upside for Greinke more than Cueto for the price. Greinke is a Cash and GPP option on DraftKings and a GPP option on FanDuel.
Darkhorse
Daniel Norris (FD-$6,600 / DK-$6,600)
My pick of Norris is a little bit of a gut call but is actually backed by some numbers that support the pick. He is a big home favorite against the White Sox and Anthony Ranaudo and he has fared very well against the White Sox in a limited sample size pitching against them twice at the end of the 2015 season throwing 10 innings while allowing zero runs and just ONE hit with seven strikeouts. He is a potential option as a #2 pitcher on two-pitcher sites in both Cash and GPP lineups.
