Wednesday night produced some solid picks with Lance McCullers and Gerrit Cole coming in as the top two pitchers of the night but I ended up on the wrong side of the Jimmy Nelson/Archie Bradley matchup. Friday features a 14-game slate (minus the Cubs/Mariners) and has quite a few interesting pitching options to explore.
Ace
Max Scherzer (FD-$11,600 / DK-$13,600)
Scherzer is the only true ace on the slate and while the Giants are not a great matchup he should be able to take advantage of the favorable ballpark and post solid numbers. Scherzer is a solid Cash game option but might not have the huge upside to pay off his high price tag in GPP lineups.
Value
Kenta Maeda (FD-$9,000 / DK-$10,200)
Maeda will face the Diamondbacks for the fourth time this season on Friday, this time, pitching at home. In his previous three starts, he has struggled against them when pitching in Arizona but blanked the Diamondbacks for six innings with four strikeouts in his lone home start. The Diamondbacks have the 5th highest K% against righties this season. Maeda is a big favorite in Vegas tonight making him a solid Cash game option if you don’t want to pay up for Scherzer and a solid GPP play.
Steven Matz (FD-$9,700 / DK-$8,500)
Matz doesn’t do anything exceptional on the mound but consistently posts solid outings giving him a chance for a win with a decent strikeout rate. He gets a favorable matchup tonight against a Rockies’ team that strikes out 23.5% (6th worst) against lefties and have the 2nd lowest wRC+ and wOBA on the road this season. Matz is another Cash game and GPP option.
Darkhorse
Steven Brault (FD-$6,400 / DK-$4,100)
Brault is dirt cheap and has solid upside pitching against the Brewers tonight. The Brewers strikeout more than another team against lefties (24.7%) and Brault has strikeout potential with five strikeouts in four innings in his major league debut and an 11.8 K/9 rate at Triple-A this season. Brault might not pitch deep into the game but if he can get through five innings with six or seven strikeouts he will be worth his $4,100 price on DraftKings. Brault is a great GPP option.
