Well, I guess I was due for a bad night. Fading Max Scherzer in Cash didn’t work out well with Carlos Carrasco pitching decent but not at an elite level like Scherzer did. Meanwhile, my Darkhorse pick, Matt Boyd, fell flat. However, today is a new day with a new slate and a new set of pitchers to analyze. So let’s get to it.
Ace
Madison Bumgarner (FD-$11,900 / DK-$13,800)
Bumgarner comes in as my top pitcher by a decent margin today. He will be pitching at home against the Brewers as a huge favorite in the lowest Vegas total on the slate. The Brewers have been solid against lefties this season and have done fairly well against Bumgarner in his career so fading him in GPPs makes some sense today with many other good options. However, he will be my primary Cash game option tonight.
Value
Drew Pomeranz (FD-$9,700 / DK-$10,400)
Pomeranz has been lights out at home this season with a 1.52 ERA and 34 strikeouts in 29.2 innings over five starts. Today, he will pitch at home against a Marlins team that strikes out 22.7% (11th worst) against lefties and has a .139 ISO (7th worst), both which will play right into Pomeranz’s game as a high strikeout pitcher throwing in a pitcher-friendly ballpark. Pomeranz is a solid Cash or GPP option.
Jaime Garcia (FD-$8,100 / DK-$7,700)
Garcia struggled in his last outing allowing five runs in 4+ innings at Cincinnati and has pitched three straight road games with a 4.86 ERA but he will be coming home tonight where he has pitched much better over his career with a 2.77 ERA. Garcia should also get a strikeout boost tonight facing an Astros team that has struck out 25.5% (2nd worst) against lefties this season. Garcia is a #2 pitcher option on two-pitcher sites in both Cash and GPP lineups.
Darkhorse
Jhoulys Chacin (FD-$6,000 / DK-$7,000)
Chacin has shown flashes of very good fantasy production when he is in the right matchup and today qualifies as one of those matchup pitching at home against the Twins. The Twins rank in the bottom 10 in K%, wOBA and wRC+ against righties this season. Chacin shut down a better hitting Tigers team in his last home start allowing just one run while striking out 10 in a complete-game victory. Chacin is worth a GPP flier tonight.
