Today is not a good day to get cute with your pitcher choices. There are landmines everywhere, which should also mean there will be a lot of good value hitters that you can select to pay up for pitching tonight. So tonight my “value” options aren’t much of a value but I’d rather play it safe with this slate. We also have Adam Conley on the hill tonight but I would not touch him on the road against the Tigers.
Ace
Corey Kluber (FD-$10,800 / DK-$13,400)
Kluber is coming off a complete game shutout with nine strikeouts in his last outing and as a result, the Indians gave him an extra day rest before his start tonight against the Braves. With the extra day rest, I do not think that Kluber will be pulled too early unless the Indians are winning big (which is a possibility). Kluber should be able to excel as long as he is in the game against the Braves offense which ranks in the bottom two in ISO, wOBA and wRC+ against righties. Kluber is a good Cash game option, especially on FanDuel but I would go away from him in GPPs due to the potential early hook.
Value
Zack Greinke (FD-$10,600 / DK-$10,600)
Greinke has pitched much better since his early season struggles and has a 1.47 ERA in June while allowing just a .225 wOBA. He has also pitched better at home recently allowing just two runs over 16 innings in his last two home starts. Tonight he is a big favorite against a Phillies team that has the 3rd worst wOBA (.292) and wRC+(78) against righties this season. Greinke also has allowed just a .173 wOBA to Phillies hitters in his career with a 30.9% strikeout rate. Greinke is a strong Cash and GPP option.
Jose Quintana (FD-$8,800 / DK-$10,400)
Quintana has cooled off after a hot start with a 5.61 ERA in June but looking closer at the opponents he has had some difficult matchups including three road starts (Boston, Cleveland, Detroit). Tonight he will come home where he has a 2.55 ERA this season to face the division-rival Twins. Quintana has pitched well against the Twins allowing just a .238 wOBA to Twins batters since 2014 with a 23.9% strikeout rate. The Twins also have the 3rd highest strikeout rate (24.5%) against lefties this season. Quintana is a solid Cash and GPP option.
Darkhorse
Lucas Giolito (FD-$7,200 / DK-$6,400)
Giolito will make his major league debut tonight at home against the Mets. Mets have struggled recently with the 3rd worst wOBA (.296) over the last 14 days and have struck out 22.9% (6th worst) against righties this season. Giolito may not pitch deep into the game unless he can limit his walks but should be able to rack up some strikeouts making him worth a GPP flier.
