Hope everyone had a fun and safe Memorial Day weekend. While Adam Conley let me down last Friday, I did manage to stay away from the Julio Urias hype-machine as Jacob deGrom did turn out to the be the right play in that matchup. Today we have a 12-game night slate to evaluate with a few solid options that are rising to the top, so let’s get to it.
Ace
Jose Fernandez (FD-$11,100 / DK-$12,400)
On days when Jake Arrieta is pitching there typically isn’t a better option but there is tonight with Fernandez who has regained his “ace” form over his last four starts with four wins, a 1.00 ERA and 43 strikeouts in 27 innings. He will face a Pirates team that isn’t the best team to pick on but with how well Fernandez is pitching right now he should be able to control the Pirates bats. Fernandez is also pitching at home tonight where he has been great throughout his career (1.64 ERA). Fernandez is a solid Cash and GPP option.
Value
Aaron Nola (FD-$8,900 / DK-$10,600)
Nola has a 2.86 ERA this season which is supported by a 2.77 SIERA to go along with a 9.55 K/9. Tonight he will face a Nationals team that ranks 6th worst in wRC+ while they are in the middle of the pack in wOBA and ISO against righties. The Nationals may also be without slugger Bryce Harper who left yesterday’s game after getting hit by a pitch. Nola is a better play on FanDuel if you want to fade the top aces in Cash games or as a good GPP pivot on either site.
Drew Smyly (FD-$9,100 / DK-$8,800)
After a great start to the season, Smyly has cooled off a little bit lately allowing 15 earned runs over his last four starts. Tonight he will look to get back on track against a Royals team that has struggled against lefties this season ranking in the bottom five in wOBA, ISO and wRC+. The Royals do put the ball in play with a low 18.5% strikeout rate which will limit Smyly’s strikeout upside. Smyly is a decent Cash game option on DraftKings or GPP flier on either site.
Darkhorse
Eduardo Rodriguez (FD-$7,600 / DK-$6,100)
Rodriguez will be making his 2016 season debut for the Red Sox tonight against the Orioles. The Orioles have been striking out a lot lately, over 30% over the last seven days, and Rodriguez has had some success against the Orioles hitters in a limited sample with 15 strikeouts in 44 plate appearances. Rodriguez might not pitch deep into the game but could still get a win if the Red Sox hitters can get to Orioles’ starter Kevin Gausman early and often. I only recommend Rodriguez as a GPP option.
