Well, I guess I was fooled twice by picking back-to-back Royals’ pitchers against the Angels the last two days, so shame on me. Looking at tonight’s slate there is one true Ace that stands out in Jake Arrieta. Also, be sure to check the weather reports leading up to game-time tonight as my top two options both have rain in the forecast. If both the Cubs and Nationals get rained out then I would look to mid-level options like Hisashi Iwakuma, Justin Verlander and Marco Estrada in Cash games (I still don’t trust Matt Harvey except as a flier in GPPs).
Ace
Jake Arrieta (FD-$12,900 / DK-$13,800)
Arrieta is coming off a no-hitter and is the obvious choice for my Ace tonight pitching at home against a Brewers team that has struck out 25.8% against righties this season (4th worst). Temperatures are expected in the low 50s with the wind blowing in at 15-20 mph. Sounds like he might be able to throw another no-hitter. About the only thing that could stop Arrieta tonight is Mother Nature as there is a chance for rain in Chicago. If the game looks like it will be played without an early game delay then you should do everything you can to get Arrieta and his huge salary in your lineup for Cash games.
Value
Gio Gonzalez (FD-$9,600 / DK-$9,600)
If you can’t make Arrieta fit into your lineup tonight then the next best option is Gonzalez pitching at home against the Phillies. The Phillies have struck out a whopping 33.8% against lefties this season which is the worst in the league by a wide margin. Gonzalez is also a big favorite so the win should follow the Ks. Note that there is also rain in the forecast in Washington tonight so be sure to watch the weather reports leading up to game-time.
Scott Kazmir (FD-$7,900 / DK-$6,700)
If we are going to pay up for Arrieta on two-pitcher sites then we will need to find a cheap value pitcher to pair with him. For me tonight that is Kazmir pitching at home against the Marlins. Giancarlo Stanton and the Marlins got to Clayton Kershaw last night in the sixth inning but before that they only had one hit through the first five innings. The Marlins rank as the 5th worst in K-rate (25.2%) against lefties this season and although they rank well in wOBA they also currently have a .381 BABIP against lefties so their production has been inflated with some good luck as well. Kazmir is a viable option in both Cash and GPPs tonight.
Darkhorse
Steven Wright (FD-$6,900 / DK-$6,600)
I have picked on the Braves offense the last two days with great success so let’s make it three days in a row with Wright as my Darkhorse pick tonight. Not expect the monster strikeout upside produced by David Price last night but Wright should be able to limit runs against the Braves who rank 3rd worst in wOBA and the league worst in ISO against righties this season. Not to mention the high likelihood of a win for Wright with the Red Sox offense hitting against Bud Norris. Wright is a decent option as the second pitcher in either Cash or GPPs on two-pitcher sites or a cheap option on FanDuel if you want to load up on bats.
