Looking at Wednesday night’s 12-game slate, there aren’t any strong Darkhorse candidates and depending on the site there are also no strong Ace candidates either. So, I will be focusing on the Value plays where we find our sweet spot for tonight’s slate.
I want to start by saying that I fully endorse using Justin Verlander on FanDuel tonight where he is priced at $10,000, just above Pomeranz and Felix Hernandez. However, on DraftKings, I do not feel that it is worth paying $12,900 for Verlander. Which leads me to the value plays…
Value
Drew Pomeranz (FD-$9,500 / DK-$9,100)
Pomeranz has not pitched well since joining the Red Sox with a 6.20 ERA over four starts but I think he gets it turned around in a big way tonight against the Yankees. The Yankees rank 6th worst in wRC+ (81) and have the 5th highest strikeout rate (23.8%) in the last 14 days. They also rank in the bottom six in ISO, wOBA and wRC+ against lefties for the season. Pomeranz is a solid Cash game and GPP option.
Felix Hernandez (FD-$9,600 / DK-$8,400)
Hernandez opposes Verlander tonight so I expect him to rise to the occasion and pitch well in a low-scoring game. His price on DraftKings is what makes him an attractive option tonight, priced at just $8,400 ($4,500 savings from Verlander). Hernandez could see an increase in his strikeout production tonight as the Tigers strike out 21.5% of the time against righties. Hernandez is only a GPP option on FanDuel but could be worth a look as both a Cash game and GPP option on DraftKings.
Robbie Ray (FD-$7,800 / DK-$9,700)
Strikeouts! Strikeouts is the name of the game for Ray. Over his last three games, he has recorded 30 strikeouts in just 16+ innings for a 40% K-rate. Tonight he will face a Mets’ team that strikes out 22.2% of the time against lefties. Unfortunately, Ray has a 7.02 ERA during those last three starts making him only a GPP option tonight.
Jaime Garcia (FD-$8,700 / DK-$7,800)
Garcia pitched great in his last start throwing eight shutout innings with 11 strikeouts in a win over the Braves. Garcia gets another favorable matchup at home against the Reds, who rank in the bottom four in wOBA and wRC+ against lefties this season with the 5th highest strikeout rate (23.5%). Garcia is a solid Cash game option, especially on DraftKings where he is only $7,800 and could also be worth a GPP flier.
